Emma Smith Refutes Accusations Joseph Was Polygamist
"No such thing as polygamy, or spiritual wifery, was taught, publically or privately, before my husbands death, that I have now, or ever had knowledge of" ( Emma Smith Feb 9, 1879, Church History Vol. 3, p.355. )

Joseph Smith Repudiates Polygamy

Joseph Smith Repudiates Polygamy
A man asked me whether the commandment [revelation] was given that a man may have seven wives; and now the new prophet has charged me with adultery.... Wilson Law [William's brother] also swears that I told him I was guilty of adultery.... I have rattled chains before in a dungeon for truth's sake. I am innocent of all these charges, and you can bear witness of my innocence, for you know me yourselves.... What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one. I am the same man, and as innocent as I was fourteen years ago [when charged with polygamy shortly after his marriage to Emma Hale]; and I can prove them all perjurers. Discerning Evil In the Early LDS Church

Discerning Evil In The Early LDS Church

Joseph Smith Spoke Of Satan Appearing To Early LDS Church Members:
There have also been ministering angels in the church which were of satan appearing as an angel of light:— A sister in the State of New York had a vision who said it was told her that if she would go to a certain place in the woods an angel would appear to her,— she went at the appointed time and saw a glorious personage descending arrayed in white ... he commenced and told her to fear God and said that her husband was called to do great things, but that he must not go more than one hundred miles from home or he would not return; whereas God had called him to go to the ends of the earth; and he has since been more than one thousand miles from home, and is yet alive. Many true things were spoken by this personage and many things that were false.—How it may be asked was this known to be a bad angel? ... by his contradicting a former revelation.
(Times and Seasons 3 [April 1, 1842]: 747)

A possible reason so many women signed affidavits Joseph Smith was their polygamist husband, was they would be "wiped from existence" If they disagreed with the Utah LDS Church leadership.

Heber C. Kimball, early "Utah LDS Mormon leader" Declares:

" It is believed in the world that our females are all common women. Well, in one sense, they are sommon- that is, they are like all other women, I suppose; but they are not unclean, for we wipe all the unclean ones from our midst: we do not only wipe them from our streets, but we wipe them out of existence."

-Journal of Discourses,vol. 7, pp. 16-21 Delivered in the Tabernacle, Great Salt Lake City, July 16, 1854.

Heber C. Kimball Also States:
"Some quietly listen to those who speak against the plurality of wives, and against almost every principle that God has revealed. Such persons have half-a-dozen devils with them all the time. You might as well deny 'Mormonism,' and turn away from it, as to oppose the plurality of wives. Let the Presidency of this Church, and the Twelve Apostles, and all the authorities unite and say with one voice that they will oppose the doctrine, and the whole of them will be damned."

- Apostle Heber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses, vol. 5, p. 203

Joseph Smith Apposed Polygamy Therefore Was Damned?

Joseph Smith Said the Accusations Were False:
"I had not been married scarcely five minutes, and made one proclamation of the Gospel, before it was reported that I had seven wives.... I am innocent of all these charges....
What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one. I am the same man, and as innocent as I was fourteen years ago; and I can prove them all perjurers."

—Joseph Smith, Jr., History of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 6:410–411

Brigham Young Admitted There Were Liars Within The Church
Some of the Elders seem to be tripped up in a moment, if the wicked can find any fault with the members of this Church; but bless your souls, I would not yet have this people faultless, for the day of separation has not yet arrived. I have many a time, in this stand, dared the world to produce as mean devils as we can; we can beat them at anything. We have the greatest and smoothest liars in the world, the cunningest and most adroit thieves, and any other shade of character that you can mention.
We can pick out Elders in Israel right here who can beat the world at gambling, who can handle the cards, cut and shuffle them with the smartest rogue on the face of God’s foot-stool. I can produce Elders here who can shave their smartest shavers, and take their money from them. We can beat the world at any game.”

 — Journal of Discourses 4:76–77 (Nov 9, 1856)
By Contrast Brigham Young Declared Joseph Smith:

The Mormon Church Rewrote Joseph Smith's Personal and Church History

The Mormon Church Has Published:
"Moreover, since the death of the Prophet Joseph, the history has been carefully revised under the strict inspection of President Brigham Young, and approved by him"(LDS History of the Church 1:v–vi).

According Federal Law, Polygamy Was Illegal In The United States During Joseph's Life Time

Yet Brigham Young Declares:
Joseph Smith Was Not A Law Breaker?
" Joseph was not killed because he was deserving of it, or because he was a wicked man; but because he was a virtuous man.  I know that to be so, as well as I know that the sun shines.
I know for myself that Joseph Smith was the subject of 48 law suites, the most of them I have witnessed with my own eyes; but not one action could ever be made to bear against him. NO LAW OR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT DID HE EVER VIOLATE. HE WAS INNOCENT AND VIRTUOUS. HE KEPT THE LAW OF HIS COUNTRY, AND HE LIVED ABOVE IT; out of 48 law suites, ( and I was with him in the most of them ) not one charge could be substantiated against him. HE WAS PURE, JUST, AND HOLY, AS TO THE KEEPING OF THE LAW"

( Brigham Young, July 11, 1852. Millinial Star, Vol. 14, p. 675. )

Therefore According Brigham Young, Joseph Smith Could Not Have Committed Polygamy.

Further More, Emma Smith Declares:
"No such thing as polygamy, or spiritual wifery, was taught, publically or privately, before my husbands death, that I have now, or ever had knowledge of"
( Emma Smith Feb 9, 1879, Church History Vol. 3, p.355. )

Emma Smith and Eliza R. Snow Signed Affidavit Joseph Smith NOT A Polygamist.
(Eliza R. Snow once claimed to be one of Joseph Smith's Plural Wives.)

We the undersigned members of the ladies' relief society, and married females do certify and declare that we know of no system of marriage being practised in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints save the one contained in the Book of Doctrine and Covenants....

Eliza R. Snow, Secretary.

Joseph Smith Gave Multiple Revelations Man Should Have But 1Wife, Women 1 Husband.

Joseph Smith Gave 1831 LDS Doctrine

and Covenants Revelation Man Should Cleave To one Wife

A revelation received on February 9, 1831, and published to this day in the Utah edition of the Doctrine and Covenants as well as our own, commands: "Thou shalt love thy wife with all thy heart, and shall cleave unto her and none else" (RLDS Section 42:7Utah Section 42:22).

Joseph Smith Gave Second 1831 Doctrine and Covenants Revelation Against Pural Marriage
The following month, March 1831, another revelation contained this language: "Marriage is ordained of God unto man; wherefore it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh, and all this that the earth might answer the end of its creation" (Doctrine and Covenants 49:3).

1835 LDS Marriage Ceremony

On August 18, 1835, a conference of the Church considered the form of marriage ceremony to be used in the Church and adopted the following covenant, which is used in every marriage ceremony in this Church to the present day:
"You both mutually agree to be each other's companion, husband and wife, observing the legal rights belonging to this condition; that is, keeping yourselves wholly for each other, and from all others, during your lives?" (Doctrine and Covenants 111:2b).

The same section which includes this marriage covenant incorporates also this declaration of belief from the Church:
"We declare that we believe that one man should have one wife; and one woman but one husband" (Doctrine and Covenants 111:4b. This section was removed from the Utah edition in 1876, and the "revelation" on polygamy substituted).

The Book of Mormon, which was translated by Joseph Smith, calls polygamy an abomination and states the rule that one man shall have one wife, "and concubines he shall have none" (Jacob 2:36).
